I finally caught up with this particular forum. Sorry I can't participate in Spanish, but the only foreign language I learned was French and that was a long time ago. I'd like to learn Spanish, though.
Anyhow, I did a little research. As a culture, America has long despised immigrants. Irish, Italian, Eastern European, Arabic, Haitian, Asian, Jewish, Mexican... every time there's a wave of immigration, the old timers start to feel threatened and try to pass all kinds of legislation restricting or limiting immigration. Every wave of immigrants appear to pose this threat to American jobs, language, health, and culture.
It doesn't even have to be illegal immigration to scare us. We fuss over the legals ones, too. The sky falls each time we open our doors to a group of people seeking a better way of life. Read up on it -- you can find a bunch of stuff on Wikipedia if you search U.S. Immigration.
But the really funny thing is that unless you're 100% Native American, you're from immigrant stock. Your ancestors were probably ridiculed by some "real Americans." And here you all are doing the same thing to the next batch of Americans.
Seems pretty hypocritcal to me.
