If you are pointing out that OTR -- USED -- to speak German, you need to know that OTR does not speak German NOW, they ASSIMULTED, they learned English, they melded into the community, they did not demand that we learn spanish, they did not demand that we accept their customs or their culture.

One thing that the story missed, they missed that St Georges Catholic Church was the northern most area of the OTR, border of OTR and Clifton. A point of interest about St Georges, it was named after a church in my g-g-grandfathers hometown by my g-g-grandfather.

The people living in OTR did not live in imposed poverty while sending most of their pay back to Germany, unlike the illegal aliens of today. Another minor point of interest, the people that settled OTR were LEGAL IMMIGRANTS and not an invading force of illegal aliens.

The German heritage in Cincinnati was predominate in Cincinnati, but it was not the only one.  There were numerous other immigrants, from Western Europe, Ireland, England, Greece,as well.  http://www.igougo.com/attractions-reviews-b102335-Cincinnati-Eden_Park.html.  My grandparents were from Eastern Europe and Germany.

Exactly, the assimilated, and that is going to happened with Hispanics, our kids are the new generation, and they speak English, is all a cycle. Then they spoke German, and they cycle and know they don’t, that is how it works, at that time they were not liked by people like you either, and then it all went away. Nobody is demanding you to learn any thing, you speak what ever language you want to, who is forcing you to learn Spanish????

They did send money back to their country, it was a little slower but they did.

Don’t be afraid to change and new cultures, you might learn a thing or two.

The reason we don't hear this over the phone is because our ancestors who came to this country couldn't wait to embrace its customs, culture, and language.

 

If your want to be an American, go home and apply to enter our country legally.

My point, if you'll read slowly, is exactly yours: we DON'T hear this phrase because our ancestors came here with the INTENTION of becoming Americans.

And I really hate having to press ONE for English - even some phone numbers at the IRS make you press ONE for English.

BUT, they did not enter the country ILLEGALLY. No one was forced to listen to "For English Dial 1", no one had to put signs in the window "for service, speak ENGLISH".

No one has any problem with LEGAL immigration, we all have a problem with ILLEGAL aliens.

no, you have it correct, my point is that we should NOT have to press 1 to speak English.
English should be the default and if the caller wants to speak spanish, chinese or klingon, they should learn to speak English.

Having visited China twice, I learned some Chinese to be able to "get by". Imagine my surprise when everyone, even the taxi drivers, understood simple english.

What makes you think that press one for English is for illegals? There are many legal’s that don’t speak English. Besides There are giving you the option, guess what, if you don’t want Spanish: DON’T PRESS ONE.

simple.... LEGALS are usually on the Citizenship track and illegals are not. To become a citizen, you must speak English.

You are so far from the truth. You can be a citizen with out speaking English; the citizenship test is in different languages. To be in this country legally you don’t have to be a citizen, you can be a tourist, student, spouse of expatriate, H1b visa ………

you go on thinking that... If you were anywhere close to the real truth, then why is there a reported estimate of 12 MILLION illegals in the USA.

Do you thing there are 12 million H1b visas available?

Do you think that these illegals are being lied to about so many of these things back in their "own country" by criminals who prey upon them and bring them into the US illegally? The Hispanics on this post seem to be full of mis-information, and I wonder if someone back home with a profit motive isn't filling their heads full of these fantasies intentionally so they part with their "coyote" money more easily?

Perhaps even some of the posters I have read here are taking advantage of their own people. As I have pointed out, a lot of these illegals are even illiterate in Spanish. They would be very easy victims.

Do you think someone is telling them there will be AMNESTY? Perhaps even their own government in an effort to get rid of "undesirables?"

Did you know that a huge amount of money and resources have been devoted to translating vitually every IRS publication into Spanish? I can print you out any instruction sheet or publication from the official IRS CD-ROM in Spanish, even a complete Spanish-English Dictionary all paid for out of the budget of the IRS.

There is apparently no money in the INS budget for the horseback patrols that use to comb the desert for illegals, but there is money in the budget for IRS handbooks that appear to create a climate welcoming these illegals into the country. How do we get rid of them when our own government seems to be welcoming them?

So far, only the IRS phone lines for the general public require you to "press one for english." The phone lines reserved for tax professionals still assume that English is spoken. But I'm sure it will come unless someone protests.

I just canceled a credit card that, if you did not "press one" actually defaulted to Spanish. I wrote a letter explaining why I was cancelling - if enough people "vote with their feet," maybe someone at these credit card companies will take notice.

the perception around the world is that Americans are rich, and I can see why this is the common view, when was the last time you have heard of someone so physically poor that they do not have medical care, they do not have access to education, and most below the imaginary "poverty line" have a working color TV and many have a cell phone even if it is a disposible phone.

I think that those that want a piece of the American way will pay dearly for that opportunity, no matter how wrong or illegal, and then you have the Mexican government providing maps and cartoon pamplets on how to enter the USA and escape and evade the USBP.

Amnesty is a possibility, afterall, Ronaldus Maximus gave blanket amnesty, but I think that if there is a plan to do that now, there will be a second American Civil War.

Castro purged his prisons and send them here, the Mexicans or Haitians, Peruvians, Guatamalians and on and on could be doing the same.

When I am bored, I press 2 and when the person answers in spanish, I say "huh? try that again in english".

What that should tell you is the even the US government sees the benefits of immigration, but they play the political game to keep you happy. What you don’t understand is there is not a system to come legally for work. Until you fix that problem nothing else is going to work.
