Thirty-four years ago there was a movie premier in Cincinnati of a film called "Let's Go for Broke", a B-movie spy flick starring a woman named Christa Helm. The film, unfortunately flopped and two years later, Christa Helm was brutally murdered outside a friend's home as she was picking him up to go to a party. The case was never solved and remained forgotten to all but Christa's family and friends.
That was until 2006 when pop culture blogger, Steven Thompson, from Covington, needed a film to use for his blog's (Booksteve's Library) ongoing article called, "Movies That Fell Through The Cracks". Thompson, who has an extensive film scrapbook, pulled the ad for "Let's Go For Broke" and started researching why the film apparently disappeared and found himself investigating a 31 year old murder.
With help from his wife, Rene, who is an experienced researcher and pop culture writer, John O'Dowd, and Christa's own daughter, Nicole Clements, Thompson was able to get interest in the case reinvigorated enough that both the LA Police Cold Case Unit and CBS's 48 Hours are taking another look at the murder.
48 Hours will show "The Last Take", the story of the Christa Helm murder on Saturday, April 26th.
