Ohio Legislation on Pit Bulls is Unjustified, Unlawful, and Unconstitutional

    Hello,

I have been a dog owner all my life.  From childhood, even before I can remember my family has always owned at least one dog.  When one passed, it wasn't long before we had another to fill the family void.  I think, in all, in my lifetime I've been associated with five dogs, whether they were bought by my parents, or myself.  Every one, part of the family.

Bruno was a German Sheppard, Spud was a mutt Terrier of some sort, Smokie was an Alaskan Malamute, Lutch is an American Pit Bull Terrier, and the latest additions Chico and Julio are Chiuauas.  Only the last three mentioned are still with us.  We had to give Smokie away because he was just too big, needed so much attention, and was showing signs of aggression.  Spud and Bruno spent their time with us and went peacefully.  But it's the last three I wish to speak about.

We've had Lutch (our Pit Bull) for almost three years now.  He was given to us by a family member who was moving and couldn't take him along.  My wife and I had the usual reservations about owning a Pit Bull.  She and I can honestly say that he's turned out to be the best dog either she or I have ever owned.  His obedience, loyalty, pride, diligence, affection, and love of family and friends are just a few of his awesome characteristics.  His abilities seem untapped and endless as we keep teaching him new things.  His capability to catch, fetch, run, and especially jump are mind-blowing.  And man does he love other dogs.

He stares out the front door (one of his favorite things to do), and continually watches the neighbors' kids and dogs, whining and wishing he could go out to play with them.  We take him on walks around the neighborhood, and the dogs that don't necessarily stay in their yards seem to follow us.  He just walks proud as can be, only noticing to seemingly say hello.  He cries and whines to take rides in the car, baths, and walks alike.  He's spent time with other dogs for whole days or weeks at a time throughout his life, and there's never been a single incident of aggression, whether with people, kids, dogs, cats, or any creature for that matter.   He's even spent time with the afforementioned Chiuauas, Chico and Julio, out at my mother's house (where they live).  Chico even seems to dominate him, snapping at him and the like.  Lutch just takes it in stride, seeming to strive for his approval.  He's just an amazing dog, really.

And now the Ohio State Legislation is trying to ban Pit Bulls.  If Ohio's lawmakers pass this bill, I'm afraid I'll have to leave the state that I proudly call home.  Make me choose Ohio or Lutch...I'll take Lutch and be on my way.

    Sadly,

    Preston T. Eversole
