    6/3/08 Storm Coverage

Compliments to all the Channel 12 weather reports & especially Tim H.

Really a great job with reporting last night - the new features are to the point.

The Local 12 Weather Authority ROCKS!!! You all did a phenomenal job covering the storms last night! I felt a little bad for Tim Hedrick though. His voice by the 11 o'clock news was starting to sound a little ragged.  What a workout! Thanks guys

this is like terrorism scaring people. it is a crime what you are doing making all these tornado alerts when there are not any

    Re: 6/3/08 Storm Coverage

Local 12 did not "create" any tornado warnings. The warnings were absolutely necessary due to storms rotating. When doppler radar detects rotation in a thunderstorm, a tornado warning is issued by the National Weather Service because at any given time a tornado could form (if it has not already done so). The Local 12 mets did an excellent job keeping up with warning after warning and notifying the viewing area. Also, in no way was anyone "scaring" people on purpose. The goal of an on-air met is to notify the public and tell them what to do and where to go for the purpose of saving lives. A tornado situation is scary for anybody whether someone is on the air talking about it or not.

Keep up the hard work Local 12!  :-)

Just remember that it is not the Channel 12 mets that "create" these warnings. Severe weather warnings come from the National Weather Service. It is the job of people like Tim, John, Jeff and Michelle to inform the public. Now that they have all of the new technology, they can let us know specifics instead of just a generalized warning.

    Re: 6/3/08 Storm Coverage

Correct. The warnings are ONLY relayed by Local12 or whatever station is broadcasting. The National Weather Service has their tools to use to identify tornadic storms. Recall too that in a few cases spotters DID see funnel clouds which also justifies a tornado warning as those can and do touch down quickly.

By the way I too wish to commend Local12 on their coverage, specifically on Wednesday night. I was under one of the above referenced tornado warnings and the information given by Tim Hedrick was accurate enough to allow me to do what I needed to do to preserve my safety. Luckily, no tornado ever did, to my knowledge or that of the NWS or Local12, touch down in Florence.
