How to tell what caused tree damage

Hi, I live in northern portion of Blue Ash. After the storm walking the property we counted at least 17 trees and large branches down. Many where sheared off at the top. They seemed to fall in all different directions. Is this strictly high winds, straightline winds or something else. The tree damage seemed to stay mostly in like a path thru the woods. Curious as to possible cause. Thanks.

Yep, had some tree damage in our neighborhood. One tree in my backyard was heavily damaged. It hit the fence (havent had time to check the fence for damage yet). We live in Colerain Township and it got very ugly here yesterday evening. Lots of wind and lightning. Not sure what caused the damage.

Hello all!  I live in Franklin Ohio and I can tell you I think it was straight line winds that hit us.  I could tell by the grass and the divits ( partially removed chunks of grass) made that this was pretty powerful wind.  I had a tree that was split down the middle and bushes uprooted in the same direction as the wind was blowing the grass and trees.  I hope that made sense.
